Fitness and regular physical activities in many ways affect your brain and mental activities in a positively way that ultimately enhance mental health, reduce risk of mental illnesses like depression and success in everyday life. And here are some of the benefits that regular exercising can have on your mental functions:

-Boost memory: Exercise has many effects that enhances memory and helps you recalling information better and faster. It increases blood flow to the brain, reduces insulin resistance, reduces inflammation, and increasing growth factors which are responsible for new blood vessels formation and growth of nervous tissue.
Researches have found also that parts of brain tissue responsible for memory and thinking are larger in size in people who regularly exercise than people who don't. Of these parts is the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is primarily responsible for memory,
that shown to be lager in those who regularly do exercises.
-Decreased energy expenditure: the sedentary life and lack of physical activity and exercise contributes in causing obesity.
-Hormonal disturbance : some hormonal imbalances can cause obesity (e.g hypothyroidism, cushing disease, cushing syndrome and polycystic ovary)
-Emotional factors: such as stress, anxiety and depression in some people are associated with increase in food intake.
-Genes : some genetic problems are associated with obesity indicating some role for genes.
-Drugs : some drugs may cause weight gain as a side effect like steroids, antidepressants, and antipsychotic drugs.
-Lifestyle : eating much processed food (fast or junk food) with limited fresh fruits and vegetables makes individual susceptible to be overweight.
The cornea: is the anterior one sixth of the outer fibrous layer of the eye ball (the posterior five sixths are formed by the sclera). It's transparent to light and it's the main refractive media of the eye (It's diopteric power 42-45 Diopter)

Corneal dimensions: the cornea isn't precisely circular, instead it's elliptical in shape with a horizontal diameter longer than the vertical one. The horizontal diameter measures 11-12 mm While the vertical measures 10-11 mm.This difference is due to conjunctival and scleral overlap which is more vetically than from the sides.

Corneal thickness: The thickness of the cornea ranges from 500 𝞵m at the central area and it increases toward the periphery of the cornea and may reach 1000 𝝻m at the limbus (the corneo-scleral junction)

Microscopically the cornea is formed of the following layers:
1- Epithelium: formed of 5-6 layers of stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium. It's about 50 𝝻m in thickness. It's highly regenerative (capable of regeneration). So abrasions in this layer heals within 24 hours.
2-Bowman's membrane : It's a structureless,non-elastic, acellular membrane that's present just below the epithelium and it's made of condensed superficial layer of the stroma. It isn't capable of regeneration so injury in this layer will heal by fibrosis (scar) leading to permanent corneal opacity that interferes with vision.
3-Stroma: It forms about 90% of the corneal thickness. It's formed of 200-250 lamellae of collagenous bundles that are regular and packed (opposite to those of the sclera which are irregular and not packed thus the cornea is transparent while the sclera is opaque)

4-Descemet's membrane: It's an elastic, highly resistant and regenerable membrane. It's secreted by the endothelium and considered as it's basement membrane.
5-Endothelium: It's a single layer of flat cells (in cut section), hexagonal cells (in front view). They are responsible for corneal dehydration (endothelial pump) which is very important to keep the cornea clear. Anemia is the decrease in the number of the red blood corpuscles (RBCs) that contains the haemoglobin pigment which deliver oxygen to all body tissues and organs and remove carbon dioxide from them to be delivered to the lung to be exhaled.

Aetiology (causes): Anemias have many causes like:
-Iron or B12 deficiencies: This the most common cause for Anemia. Deficiency of either Iron or vitamin B12 can lead to anemia. In iron deficiency the RBCs will be small in size (microcytes) with little amount of hamoglobin inside(hypochromic). The opposite occurs in case of vitamin B12 deficiency where the RBCs are larger than normal (macrocytes).Iron deficiency anemia may also occur in intestinal infection with hookworm(a condition common in children and young adults).
-Haemolytic anemias: A group of hereditary and acquired diseases characterized by excessive RBCs destruction (haemolysis) with inability of the bone marrow to compensate these amounts so anemia ensue. The peripheral blood will show normocytic normochromic RBCs, But their number will be much reduced than normal values. It's either:
*Hereditary(congenital): Hereditary spherocytosis, sickle cell anemia ,thalassemia...etc
*Acquired: Erythroblastosis foetalis, acquired hemolytic anemia, infections and poisoning.
-Acute post-haemorrhagic anemia: occurs after sudden loss of large blood volume e.g. accidents, ruptured esophageal varices, haemorrhage from peptic ulcer, haemophilia...etc
-Aplastic anemia: In which the bone marrow(the part of your body responsible for blood synthesis) can't synthesis blood sufficiently "bone marrow hypofunction". So their is deficiency in all blood cells i.e.red blood corpuscles(RBCs),white blood cells(WBCs) and platelets. This is called "pancytopenia''.
What's concussion ?

Concussion is a trauma-induced
alteration in the mental status that may or may not be associated with loss of consciousness. Concussion is a mild form of Traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Mechanism: many theories have been postulated, the most important is:

The levels of glutamate(an excitatory neurotransmitter) increase just after a concussion and the brain enters a hyperglycolytic (increased rate of glycolysis) & hypermetabolic state.

 Clinical picture:

-In mild cases: the patient may vomit once or twice showing no detectable physical signs. After few minutes of mental confusion, he may recover completely.

-In severe cases: patient may show

-Pale face -Cold sweats -Rapid pulse -Shallow respiration

-Lost reflexes -Vomiting -Low blood pressure

Fate of concussion:

-Complete recovery → In the majority of cases.

-Incomplete recovery → The patient regains consciousness, but develops a state of post concussion (P.C) during which he is drowsy, irritable with headache and vomiting. Few days later he may recover completely or suffer from retrograde amnesia, impairment of memory perception and post-traumatic automatism.

-Brain compression → The patient may pass directly to compression or after a period of lucid interval.

-Death→ Rare to occur.

Brain death is the complete loss of all brain functions including those of the brain stem like cardiac functions and spontaneous respiration. It differs from "persistent vegetative state" which results from damage to the cerebral cortex only and in which the person is in deep coma but he is capable of maintaining cardiac functions and respiration as the brain stem is not affected. In the former condition the person is truely and legally dead, while in the latter he is not considered dead at all.

Criteria of brain death:

-the person must be in deep coma.

-he must be on a mechanical ventilator.

-absence of response to painful stimuli.

-firm diagnosis of the cause of death, which must be irremediable and has been pesistent for at least 6 hours.

-absence of brain stem reflexes

Tests for brain stem reflexes:

-no pupillary response to light (i.e no miosis when eye exposed to light)

-absent corneal reflex ( reflex blinking on touching the cornea)

-absent oculocephalic reflex (doll's eye): in functioning brain stem when the head is moved from one side to the other the eye is moved to the contralateral side (i.e fixing a point in the visual field) ,but if the brain stem is dead this movement is abolished.

-pharyngeal and tracheal reflexes are also absent ( no gagging or coughing)

these tests should be done with body core temperature not less than 35.5 C to avoid hypothermia.
Importance of brain death diagnosis:
-early determination of death is very important for prompt organ taking for transplantation purposes.
-the legality for discontinuation of life supporting equipments.
-the determination of time of death which is important in criminal & civil problems.
-early death determination is favorable at the time of epidemics to dispose the dead body as early as possible to guard against the spread of infection.
-to differentiate between death & suspended animations(death like state) which can be induced by toxic doses of a hypnotic,sedative,narcotic...etc or in cases of "Yoga" practitioners.

Today on the Giornale di Brescia on newsstands we talk about

security and prevention and we propose an in-depth analysis - with numbers, rules and testimonies - on the phenomenon of neighborhood control that is spreading in our province.

In the pages reserved for the city, we refer to the case of the subway loan in court: the Loggia has taken legal action against the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

Today we also focus on the wonders of nature: you can read an article dedicated to the first five monumental trees of Brescia, all located on Lake Garda.

Very curious is then a story set in Lumezzane: some individuals intend to buy a shed to reduce it and solve the problem of a dangerous curve.
